The official spokesman of the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen, Colonel Turki al-Maliki, announced that on 24th June 2018, the Saudi Royal Air Defence Force intercepted two ballistic missiles launched by Iran-backed Houthi militia in Yemen towards the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The missiles were fired towards Riyadh and deliberately targeted densely populated civilian areas. Fragments of the destroyed missiles fell on residential areas but no injuries or damage to property were reported.
Colonel al-Maliki said that this hostile action proved the continued involvement of the Iranian regime in supporting the Houthi armed group with sophisticated weapons in a clear and blatant violation of UN Security Council Resolutions 2216 and 2231, with the aim of threatening the security of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as well as regional and international security. He added that the launching of ballistic missiles towards populated cities and villages was a violation of international humanitarian law.
