The official spokesman of the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen, Colonel Turki Al-Maliki, today confirmed that at 07.23 a.m. the Saudi Royal Air Defence intercepted a ballistic missile launched from Yemen by the Iranian-backed Houthi militia. Colonel Al-Maliki said that the missile was launched from the Yemeni territory of Sa’adah toward the city of Khamis Mushait in the South West of Saudi Arabia.
This failed attack represents another instance of the Houthi rebels purposefully targeting large civilian populations. These actions, supported and financed by the Iranian regime, are an explicit violation of the United Nations resolutions 2216 and 2231. They not only threaten the security of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and regional and international stability, but the targeting of populated cities and villages is also a clear abuse of international humanitarian law.
Colonel Al-Maliki reiterated his call for the international community to take more serious steps to stop Iran’s blatant violations of international norms and values. He stated that Iran should be held accountable for the continued smuggling of ballistic missiles and weapons to terrorist groups and outlaws working to undermine the legitimate government of Yemen. The failure to do so effectively will continue to weaken regional and international security.
